Considering orthodontics for yourself, or a loved one? We’ve got the low-down on the three most common types of braces.
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces are very small and thin, straightening your teeth with high-tech archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile!
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Ceramic braces are made of clear ceramic and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly by teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. Clear braces are less visually prominent and have all the same benefits as metal braces. However, since they are more fragile than metal brackets, we tend to use them on upper teeth more than lower teeth.
Clear aligners are increasing in popularity. Invisalign, a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays gradually straighten your teeth. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want, plus brushing and flossing are easier. A consultation with Dr. Parrish will tell you if you are candidate for Invisalign!
